PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remained reticent on the team’s starting quarterback situation for their upcoming game against the New York Jets. Despite Tomlin’s reluctance to publicly commit, indications suggest that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is poised to make his season debut.

As reported, Wilson has returned to practice without limitations for the first time since suffering a calf injury during training camp, which he exacerbated just before the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. The injury sidelined the nine-time Pro Bowler, but reports state that Wilson’s workload has increased steadily in recent weeks.

Currently, Justin Fields has been fulfilling the quarterback role, guiding the Steelers to a 4-2 record. Fields has expressed awareness of his performance limitations, stating, “I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you.” Despite achieving some victories, Fields acknowledges areas for improvement. “Of course, I’m glad about that, but there are areas that I could be better at,” he added.

If Wilson starts against the Jets, he will face Aaron Rodgers, marking a decisive matchup in the quarterback room. “We got a player with talent who hadn’t had an opportunity to play, so we’re going to potentially explore those things,” Tomlin stated, hinting at the possibility of Wilson’s return transforming the dynamic of the team.

The Steelers have also anticipated the return of outside linebacker Alex Highsmith, who has been sidelined with a groin injury. His return is expected to bolster a linebacking corps that has been struggling with injuries to key players, including replacements Nick Herbig and DeMarvin Leal.

Highsmith expressed cautious optimism, saying, “I’m feeling good, optimism is very, very high. Just got to keep trending upwards, continue to feel better and keep getting better.” The Steelers could certainly benefit from both Highsmith and potentially Wilson’s experience and leadership on the field.

The team’s performance has maintained a steady pace, being hopeful to exploit the newfound momentum with key players returning to health as they face the Jets.
