Russell Wilson Responds to Sean Payton’s Controversial Comments

DENVER, Colorado — Russell Wilson, renowned for his polished public image, took a bold step on Twitter Tuesday, voicing his displeasure at comments made by Broncos coach Sean Payton. After the Denver Broncos’ recent victory over the New York Jets, Payton indicated a preference for facing rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart instead of Wilson.
Payton’s remarks suggested that he found the prospect of battling the less experienced Dart more favorable than going up against the seasoned Wilson. In response, Wilson tweeted, “Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media,” including laughing emojis and a “Let’s Ride” remark.
The reference to “bounty hunting” stems from Payton’s suspension during the 2012 season due to a scandal involving the New Orleans Saints. Wilson’s response underscores the tension between the two, reflecting some frustration over Payton’s comments.
The atmosphere in New York has not been entirely welcoming for Wilson, especially following a controversial incident 12 days ago when Dart was checked for a concussion. Fans showed their disapproval at the thought of Wilson returning to the field during this critical moment.
Additionally, coach Brian Daboll expressed intentions to timeout if Dart was cleared, implying that he would have preferred Dart over Wilson during a pivotal fourth down.
The friction also hearkens back to Wilson’s late-season benching in 2023, aimed at preventing an injury that could have cost the Broncos millions, as Wilson was due $39 million for 2024 and $37 million for 2025. The decision to bench him effectively denied Wilson those financial guarantees.
On a day where Jets owner Woody Johnson made headlines with sharp criticism of a player’s performance, Wilson’s candid response marks a notable shift in character, raising questions about what may unfold next in this ongoing saga.
