Russia Launches Missile Strikes on Kyiv, Injuring Dozens in Escalating Conflict with Ukraine
Russia has intensified its assault on Ukraine by launching a series of missile strikes on the capital city of Kyiv, causing injuries to at least 17 individuals as reported by local authorities.
The attack, which marks the first large-scale strike in the conflict, involved a barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles targeting Kyiv and its surrounding areas, according to Serhiy Popko, the head of the city’s military administration.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent, Rob McBride, stated that Kyiv officials estimated around 31 Russian missiles were deployed during the attack, including two air-launched ballistic missiles, with air defenses successfully intercepting several dozen enemy missiles.
Despite downing a significant number of missiles, falling rocket debris resulted in injuries and damage across the city, including incidents at a kindergarten, an apartment building, and a car engulfed in flames.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that numerous residential and industrial structures were affected by the strikes, necessitating nearly three hours of air alerts to secure the area.
The missile offensive followed a visit by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to Kyiv, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine’s resistance against Russian forces.
With critical aid pending in the US Congress since late 2023, Ukrainian troops have faced mounting challenges, including ammunition shortages, prompting concerns over their ability to sustain their defense in the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Western allies to demonstrate the necessary political will to assist Kyiv, emphasizing the need for additional air defense systems to safeguard regions from Kyiv to Kherson amid escalating violence.
In parallel attacks Wednesday, casualties were reported in both Ukraine and Russia, with five individuals killed by a Russian missile strike in Kharkiv and additional casualties in Russian border regions.
Russian President Moscow, who faced minimal opposition in his recent re-election, has vowed to stabilize border areas, while Russian forces continue to advance after repelling Ukrainian offensives.
The recent escalation, including territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, marks a concerning development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
