SEATTLE, Wash. — Sam Howell‘s tenure with the Seahawks may be short-lived as the NFL Draft approaches. General manager John Schneider, who acquired Howell from the Washington Commanders last offseason, now faces a potential trade as the team seeks to bolster its quarterback roster.

Reports indicate that the Seahawks have received inquiries about Howell after they signed Drew Lock and Sam Darnold, creating a crowded quarterback room. draft analyst Adam Peters noted, “With Howell available, Seattle could be looking to draft another passer this weekend.” Howell’s increased competition raises questions about his future.

Howell, who completed just five of 14 passes for 24 yards last season, has one year left on his rookie contract. Despite challenges, some see him as a valuable third-string quarterback. However, the signing of Lock and the trade of Geno Smith to the Raiders complicate his position.

Meanwhile, the Commanders are gearing up for the 2025 NFL Draft, possessing only five picks. General manager Adam Peters stated, “We put ourselves in a position not to force something,” indicating a strategic approach to their draft needs.

The Commanders are not expected to draft a quarterback, having selected one in the previous year. Instead, they might focus on strengthening their roster, especially on defense, where they struggled last season. Todd McShay speculated that Washington could look for a pass rusher or a cornerback in the draft.

While Howell’s fate hangs in the balance, Schneider’s options are expanding. The potential for trading Howell could allow the Seahawks to acquire more draft picks as they prepare for a competitive season.

As teams make last-minute moves before the draft, Howell’s prospects remain uncertain. Commanders fans who once believed he could be their future starter may soon see him don a different jersey.
