A person is currently in custody after an incident involving gunfire near former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to four senior law enforcement officials who briefed NBC News, an AR-style rifle was recovered near the site of the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has labeled the event an “attempted assassination” of former President Trump and has commenced a thorough investigation. A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, Steven Cheung, stated that “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.” The Secret Service, in collaboration with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is also conducting an investigation into what they have described as a ‘protective incident’ involving the former president.

Details from those familiar with the event reveal that Trump was on the golf course between the fifth and sixth holes when noises resembling gunfire were heard nearby. In response, the Secret Service moved quickly to ensure his safety, though there is no evidence suggesting that Trump was directly targeted by any suspect.

Local police authorities are actively investigating the origin of the gunfire. Trump left the golf course in his motorcade a few hours after the occurrence and returned to his Mar-a-Lago resort, as confirmed by sources.

Notably, Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina reported having spoken with Trump after the incident. He expressed that Trump appeared to be in good spirits and remained resolute about his political ambitions.

This event has not disrupted Trump’s campaign schedule for the following week, as reported by close associates. Furthermore, the White House has acknowledged being briefed on the situation and affirmed their relief that Trump is unharmed. Vice President Kamala Harris has also been informed of the incident, stating her gladness that Trump is safe. She emphasized that “violence has no place in America.”

The suspect linked to the incident was apprehended when deputies from the Martin County Sheriff's Office stopped a vehicle on Interstate 95, which was believed to be connected to the occurrence. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is scheduled to hold a news conference later today to provide more details.
