Senate Advances Controversial Nomination of Kash Patel for FBI Director

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 along party lines on Thursday to advance the nomination of Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s pick for FBI director, sending his nomination to the full Senate amid widespread Democratic concerns. The timing of the vote comes as the committee prepares for a final confirmation vote expected next week.
Patel’s selection has generated controversy due to his history as a Trump loyalist and his previous comments criticizing the FBI, which Democrats argue threaten the agency’s integrity amid ongoing investigations of the January 6 Capitol riot and foreign interference in U.S. elections.
“This is a guy whose judgment is beyond questionable. It’s appallingly bad,” said Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island. “[Patel] will come back to haunt you.”
During his confirmation hearing, Patel acknowledged the criticisms he faces, claiming that his remarks about the FBI’s leadership structure were taken out of context. He has previously referred to investigators as “government gangsters” and suggested controversial proposals such as shutting down the FBI headquarters in Washington.
Senate Democrats, including Dick Durbin, voiced alarm over Patel’s lack of experience and past behavior. Durbin stated, “We are inviting a political disaster if we put Kash Patel into this job,” urging Republican colleagues to consider the long-term implications of appointing someone viewed as a partisan figurehead.
In contrast, Patel’s Republican supporters have touted his extensive federal experience and criticized the FBI for alleged bias in their investigations. GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee argued, “The American people are sick and tired of two tiers of justice.”
Patel has previously worked for the Justice Department and gained prominence while serving as a staffer on the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee, where he was involved in investigating ties between Trump and Russia. His rise within the Trump administration led to his appointment as a national security official and, later, chief of staff to the Defense Secretary.
Despite his nominations facing scrutiny, past nominees for Trump’s cabinet have received considerable support from Republican senators. As Patel’s nomination moves forward, all eyes are on the full Senate, which is likely to vote on his confirmation soon.
