Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss has expressed her excitement about the new appointment of Senator Malarndirri McCarthy as the Minister for Indigenous Australians.

Senator McCarthy was sworn in today after the resignation of former Indigenous Minister Linda Burney, who decided to leave her position and will not run in the next election.

Commissioner Kiss described Senator McCarthy as an outstanding advocate for First Nations people and communities. She mentioned that she looks forward to collaborating with her to further the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia.

With her extensive background in both federal and Northern Territory politics, particularly her previous role as the Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians and Indigenous Health, Senator McCarthy is well-prepared for this new challenge.

Commissioner Kiss highlighted Senator McCarthy’s deep understanding of the issues affecting First Nations communities and her proven ability to effectively engage with various stakeholders, including individuals, families, agencies, and organizations.

Senator McCarthy, who began her career as a journalist, brings valuable communication skills that will aid in addressing the complex issues surrounding First Nations people.

Commissioner Kiss shared her optimism about working with Minister McCarthy to bring about positive changes that will ensure better quality of life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Senator McCarthy celebrated her new role on social media, stating that she felt “truly humbled” to succeed her friend and mentor, Linda Burney, in this position.

Senator McCarthy, who hails from Borroloola and is part of the Yanyuwa Garrawa people, shared her gratitude towards the Prime Minister and the community she represents in the Northern Territory, promising to bring their voices to the Cabinet table.

Her journey in politics has been marked by her strong advocacy, especially during the recent referendum campaign.
