Senior TMC Leader Tapas Roy Resigns as Baranagar MLA, Likely to Quit Mamata Banerjee-Led Party
Veteran Trinamool Congress leader Tapas Roy announced his resignation as Baranagar MLA on Monday, sparking speculation about his future within the party that is headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Roy’s decision came in the aftermath of the ED raid at his BB Ganguly Street residence in Kolkata earlier this year. The leader expressed disappointment with the party’s response to the allegations of corruption looming over their governance in West Bengal.
During a press interaction, Roy openly criticized the handling of the Sandeshkhali controversy along with the lack of support from TMC when the ED investigated his residence amid the civic body recruitment accusations.
The seasoned TMC figure, who started his political journey in 1996 as an MLA for Congress and later transitioned to TMC, pointed out that his resignation indicated a lack of respect and recognition he felt from the party leadership.
Tapas Roy emphasized that internal conflicts and the absence of sympathy from the party post the ED raid were key factors that led to his decision. He highlighted the prevalence of corruption within the TMC and voiced concerns over the party’s governance.
Despite efforts from senior TMC leaders like Kunal Ghosh and Bratya Basu to mollify Roy, the leader seemed resolute in his stance, indicating a potential exit from the party.
The Baranagar MLA’s move could have notable ramifications for the TMC in the upcoming political landscape, potentially altering the dynamics within the party ahead of future elections.
With speculations rife about Roy’s next steps, his resignation not only signals a personal stand but also sheds light on the internal workings and challenges within TMC that may surface in the near future.
