Severe Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Chambers County Until 11 p.m.

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Alabama — The National Weather Service issued an updated weather alert on Friday at 10:09 p.m. for strong thunderstorms expected until 11 p.m. Residents can expect wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
According to the weather service, Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm over La Fayette at 10:08 p.m., moving east at 15 mph. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects,” the alert stated.
Areas affected by the alert include Lanett, Lafayette, La Fayette, Lakeview, Five Points, Chambers County Lake, Fredonia, Post Oak Forks, Veasey Creek Park, Denson, Huguley, Amity Park, Standing Rock, Buffalo, Southern Harbor, White Plains, Stroud Creek, and Rocky Point.
The weather service recommends, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.” Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Residents are advised not to drive through flooded roadways.
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also reported. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm, so seeking shelter inside a building or vehicle is crucial.
Each year, there are about 25 million lightning strikes in the U.S., with approximately 20 fatalities due to lightning annually. The threat of lightning increases as thunderstorms approach.
To ensure safety during thunderstorms, residents should adhere to specific guidelines. For those indoors, it’s essential to wait for the all-clear signal. If caught outdoors without shelter, they should find low ground and avoid tall structures.
Heavy rainfall can cause flooding, especially if it is prolonged or involves excessive runoff. Residents should be cautious about rapid water flow and maintain a safe distance from drainage areas.
Motorists are advised to maintain safe driving distances and to slow down on wet roads. Visibility is crucial, and turning on headlights can help other drivers see your vehicle better.
The first half-hour of rain is especially dangerous as roads can become slick due to a mix of rain, grime, and oil. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and stop in safe areas if visibility becomes extremely limited.
In the face of severe weather, residents should stay informed and follow local authorities’ guidance to ensure a safe experience.
