Severe Thunderstorm Hits Central California Communities

HOLLISTER, Calif. – The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northwestern San Benito County and southeastern Santa Clara County, including the cities of Gilroy and Hollister. The warning was in effect until 3:30 PM PST on March 5, 2025.
At approximately 2:59 PM PST, meteorologists detected a significant thunderstorm located five miles east of Gilroy, moving southeast at 15 miles per hour. The storm posed substantial hazards, with potential wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph and small hail reported.
These severe conditions could result in damage to roofs, siding, and trees, alongside hazardous travel conditions due to accumulating hail. Residents in affected areas were urged to take necessary precautions and stay vigilant.
“Drivers should exercise caution, slowing down to avoid hazards on the road,” the National Weather Service advised. “Stay indoors and keep updated on local alerts regarding this storm.”
During this warning period, residents reported issues such as downed trees and limited visibility on local roads. The storm’s impacts prompted officials to remind the public to prioritize safety until the severe weather passes.
