Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for Ontario Regions
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for multiple regions in Ontario, including Barrie, Orillia, and Midland, extending to Bracebridge and Gravenhurst. The alert, issued on September 25, 2024, warns of the potential development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail and heavy rainfall.
According to Environment Canada, the affected areas could experience heavy downpours bringing 30 to 50 millimeters of rain, hail up to two centimeters in diameter, and a potential risk of tornadoes. The most critical period for these weather phenomena is expected from the afternoon into the early evening.
“Thunderstorms are anticipated to develop and pass across the region,” stated a representative from Environment Canada, who advised residents to be vigilant and take necessary precautions. Despite being the early part of autumn, conditions remain conducive to tornado development.
Further details indicate that large hail poses a significant threat to property and personal safety, while heavy rainfall could cause flash floods and accumulation of water on roads. Emergency Management Ontario recommends that individuals seek immediate shelter should adverse weather conditions arise.
The severe thunderstorm watch is part of routine measures taken when atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of potentially hazardous weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rain. Residents are encouraged to keep monitoring updates and forecasts from Environment Canada and to report severe weather using designated communication channels.
In addition to central Ontario regions, a similar watch is in effect for the northern Kawarthas, encompassing northern Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County, as thunderstorms are projected to move through on the same day.
