Environment Canada has reported that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail. Wind gusts could reach up to 100 kilometers per hour, accompanied by hail the size of a toonie.
This line of thunderstorms is expected to progress through southwestern Ontario during the evening and into the overnight hours. Residents should be aware of the potential for tornadoes, albeit at a lesser risk.
Power outages are likely due to the intensity of the storm system. Strong wind gusts could result in damage to buildings, uprooting of trees, and the risk of large vehicles being blown off the road. Intense lightning is anticipated with the thunderstorms that may develop.
Emergency Management Ontario advises individuals to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. It is important to stay informed by monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are conducive for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing hazardous weather phenomena, including large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.
