Simon Harris Set to Succeed Varadkar as Ireland’s Next Prime Minister
Simon Harris is on track to assume the role of Ireland‘s next prime minister after key potential competitors opted out of the race.
Harris, at 37, received substantial backing from numerous lawmakers in the Fine Gael party following Leo Varadkar‘s resignation as party leader.
The frontline contenders from the Fine Gael party, including Trade Minister Simon Coveney, Justice Minister Helen McEntee, and Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe, have all withdrawn their candidacies.
This gives Simon Harris a clear path to take over from Varadkar, who will continue as Taoiseach until the new party leader is approved by the parliament.
With the endorsements in place, it is expected that Fine Gael will select its new leader at the upcoming annual conference on April 6, setting the stage for Harris’ election as prime minister when the Dáil Eireann reconvenes on April 9.
Simon Harris, currently serving as the Minister for Higher Education, is known for his favorability within the Fine Gael circles and his adept debating skills, particularly in engaging with the Sinn Féin opposition.
