Grand Central Madison Smoke Train Disruption

NEW YORK, NY — Train services faced significant disruptions Tuesday morning following reports of smoke in the rail tunnel connecting to Grand Central Madison.

Firefighters responded to a two-alarm call as the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) dispatched units to the scene. An FDNY spokesman confirmed the response but provided no further details about the situation.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported that smoke was detected shortly after 8 a.m. The smoke originated in the lower level of the 63rd Street Tunnel, which connects Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) tracks to Grand Central. However, the precise location of the smoke condition remains unclear.

While the smoke affected LIRR services, F train operations were not notably impacted. Trains on the Babylon, Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, and West Hempstead branches were rerouted either to Penn Station or Jamaica.

Additionally, Port Washington service to Grand Central was suspended, and several trains on the Far Rockaway and Hempstead branches were canceled.

This is a developing story, and updates will continue as new information becomes available.
