Sohum Shah Announces Sequel to Critically Acclaimed Film ‘Tumbbad’

Actor and producer Sohum Shah has officially announced the development of a sequel to his critically acclaimed film “Tumbbad,” which originally premiered in 2018. The announcement was made on Saturday, following the film’s successful re-release in theatres.

“Tumbbad,” directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced under Sohum Shah Films, was initially released on October 12, 2018, and garnered significant critical praise. The film is set in a village in Maharashtra and tells the story of Vinayak Rao, portrayed by Shah, who succumbs to greed while searching for a mythical treasure protected by a dark entity known as Hastar. Shah has promised that the sequel will delve more profoundly into the theme of greed.

Upon its re-release, “Tumbbad” performed exceptionally well at the box office. It collected ₹1.65 crore on its first day, which is nearly triple the earnings of its original opening day six years ago. The positive response from audiences has been overwhelming and reaffirms the ethos of Sohum Shah Films, which prioritizes content.

Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR INOX Pictures Limited, expressed optimism about the film’s continued success in its second run, citing it as a “blockbuster” in the re-release category. Akshay Rathi, a theatre owner in central India, mentioned that the audience’s engagement is promising and that “Tumbbad” could become one of the highest-grossing re-releases.

As “Tumbbad” continues to capture the audience’s imagination, Shah is eagerly looking forward to pushing the cinematic boundaries with “Tumbbad 2” by introducing more complex twists and further exploring the world created in the original film.
