SpaceX Gears Up for Historic Starship Catch and Resumes Falcon 9 Launches
SpaceX is on the cusp of achieving a groundbreaking feat in space technology as it prepares to attempt the first-ever catch of its Starship Super Heavy booster using a giant robotic tower. This ambitious endeavor, which could be the most daring in the company’s history, involves catching the largest rocket ever built after it has flown to space. The Super Heavy booster, powered by 33 advanced Raptor engines, will ascend to an altitude of about 70 kilometers before executing a complex boost-back maneuver to return to the launch site for the catch attempt.
The FAA has recently cleared SpaceX to resume launches of its Falcon 9 rocket, following a brief grounding due to issues during the Crew-9 mission on September 28. The FAA reviewed and accepted SpaceX-led investigation findings and corrective actions for the mishaps, allowing the Falcon 9 to return to regular flight operations as of October 11.
In addition to the Falcon 9 clearance, SpaceX is also gearing up for the fifth test flight of its Starship megarocket, which is scheduled for October 13, pending regulatory approval. The company is confident that it will receive the necessary clearance in time for the launch. This mission is part of SpaceX’s broader efforts to develop the Starship for future missions to the moon and Mars.
The catch attempt of the Super Heavy booster is a critical step in SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology, aiming to significantly reduce the cost and complexity of space missions. The process involves the booster performing a boost-back burn to change its trajectory and target the launchpad, where a robotic tower will attempt to catch it. This innovative approach has sparked both optimism and caution among space enthusiasts, with many discussing the potential outcomes and challenges on social media platforms).
