Steelers and Patriots Renew Rivalry in Week 3 Showdown
FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will face the New England Patriots this Sunday, rekindling a longstanding rivalry as both teams enter the game with 1-1 records.
This matchup features two of the most successful franchises in the NFL over the last 30 years. From 1996 to 2016, the Steelers and Patriots met in the playoffs five times, with New England prevailing in four of those encounters, earning a reputation as a dominant force.
The Patriots began the Mike Vrabel era with a loss but bounced back last week, securing their first win under Vrabel. Conversely, the Steelers started the season with a thrilling victory but suffered a significant defeat against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.
The game is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, with kickoff at 1 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium. Fans can watch the game on CBS, and various streaming options are also available.
The historical context adds weight to the meeting; since 1996, the Steelers have managed just two wins in Foxborough, with their last victory there occurring in 2008. The Patriots have consistently been a challenge for Pittsburgh, winning four straight games against them at home, including the 2016 AFC Championship.
The Steelers have made some roster changes ahead of the game, signing former Patriots players in safety and linebacker. Both were picked up after being waived by New England.
Despite offseason efforts to improve their run defense, the Steelers have struggled early this year, allowing consecutive 100-yard rushers. Pittsburgh faces challenges due to injuries and communication issues on defense.
Running back Jaylen Warren is expected to see more action, especially following his impressive performance last week where he accumulated 134 all-purpose yards, highlighted by a 65-yard catch that quarterback described as “one of the greatest catch and runs I’ve seen.”
While the Patriots are showing signs of improvement under Vrabel, many expect the Steelers to come out on top as they seek redemption from their recent loss. Predictions favor a close contest, with a projected score of Steelers 20, Patriots 16.
