Strong Winds May Cause Power Outages Across Denver Area

DENVER, Colorado – Xcel Energy is warning customers in the Denver area of potential power outages due to critical fire weather predicted for Monday, October 20, 2025. The utility company announced on Sunday evening that it will not proceed with proactive power shutoffs in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Jefferson, Larimer, and Denver counties.
Initially, Xcel considered implementing Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) for safety, but this was canceled after updated forecasts showed reduced wind speeds. “Temporarily shutting off power is not a step taken lightly and is only used when other methods are not sufficient to prevent wildfires,” officials stated.
However, customers should still be prepared for possible outages as strong winds, expected to reach up to 50 mph, could impact power lines starting Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the region from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., which indicates conditions are ideal for rapid fire spread.
Humidity levels are expected to drop to around 15%, creating an enhanced risk for fires, as noted by forecasters. In response, Xcel Energy has activated Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS), which increases the system’s sensitivity to contact with power lines. If any issue is detected, power lines will automatically shut off, extending outages until crews can safely inspect the area.
Crews will be monitoring power lines on Monday to restore service quickly when it is safe to do so. Xcel advises all customers in potential outage areas to check their communication preferences on their accounts to receive the latest updates on outages. Customers are also encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions by assembling emergency kits with essential supplies.
This situation highlights Xcel’s ongoing efforts to manage wildfire risks following past incidents. Customers are urged to take responsible precautions and to stay informed through Xcel’s website and local weather updates.
