Renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Murty’s nomination coincides with the celebration of International Women’s Day, symbolizing the strength of women in shaping India‘s destiny.

President of India nominates 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament for their exceptional contributions to various fields such as arts, literature, sciences, and social services.

Expressing her delight at the nomination, Sudha Murty stated that it is a great honor and a new responsibility for her to work for the country. The news was well received on social media, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulating her.

Sudha Murty, at age 73, is a well-known philanthropist, author, and former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, founded by her husband Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys. She currently serves as the chairperson of the foundation.

Born in Shiggaon, Haveri District, North Karnataka, Sudha Murty is an accomplished engineer with a gold medal from the Institute of Engineers. She has been actively involved in various social causes and literary pursuits, with over 30 books and numerous awards to her credit.

Recognized for her work, Sudha Murty has been honored with awards such as the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Crossword Book Awards. She is known for her philanthropic initiatives, advocacy for social awareness, and promotion of public healthcare.

Her family members include husband Narayana Murthy and son-in-law Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, making her a prominent figure with ties in India and the UK. Sudha Murty’s work has extended to educational and literary endeavors, such as establishing libraries and promoting rural development across India.
