World leaders gathered at the G7 summit in Puglia, Italy, where Ukraine‘s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for significant decisions to support his country’s defense against invading Russian forces. The summit, attended by leaders of the G7 nations, including the White House, made progress on a plan to utilize frozen Russian assets to raise funds for Ukraine.

A security agreement was signed between Ukraine and Japan at the summit, with a similar deal expected with the US. The frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia in Belgium are being considered for financial support, generating interest to fund a yearly $50bn aid plan for Ukraine.

President Biden‘s security adviser Jake Sullivan highlighted the preliminary plan, despite Russian objections, with hopes for a successful outcome. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged substantial support for Ukraine‘s energy and humanitarian needs.

The political landscape in G7 countries, including France, Italy, and the US, adds complexity to the summit’s agenda. With potential leadership changes looming, there is a sense of urgency to deliver aid to Ukraine amidst domestic challenges.

Additional topics at the summit include a keynote address by Pope Francis on artificial intelligence regulation. Amidst geopolitical uncertainties, the summit aims to address critical global issues and strategic alliances.
