ALAMEDA, Calif. — Surveillance video captured the moments after Coast Guard personnel fired at a U-Haul truck last Thursday night. The shooting occurred during a protest near Coast Guard Island. Witnesses say they were opposing the expected arrival of over 100 immigration officers in the Bay Area.
The shots rang out around 10 p.m. as the driver of the U-Haul reportedly sped toward the personnel in reverse. The Coast Guard reported that no one was injured among their ranks during the four-second barrage of gunfire. The shooting was recorded by a surveillance camera located roughly a block east of the bridge leading to the island.
About a minute after the shooting, the U-Haul was seen traveling down Dennison Street. Notably, law enforcement was not following the vehicle at that moment. The driver then executed a U-turn and parked on the same street.
Approximately three minutes after the shooting, a dark-colored car arrived next to the driver’s side of the U-Haul. A person exited the vehicle, seemingly assisting the U-Haul driver into the back seat before they drove away. It remains unclear if the individuals in the car were acquaintances of the driver, or if they transported him to a hospital.
Minutes later, bystanders inspected the U-Haul, noticing multiple bullet holes. They flagged down a police officer, who was passing by, and by around 10:05 p.m., several officers responded to the scene.
The Department of Homeland Security later reported that the driver sustained a stomach wound and was subsequently held for a mental health evaluation. Reports from the San Francisco Chronicle indicate that, as of now, the driver has not been arrested or charged. The reasons behind his actions that night remain unknown.
Additionally, a bystander was reported to have been hit by a fragment from the gunfire, but was later released from the hospital.
