Tamilisai Soundararajan Resigns As Telangana Governor And Puducherry Lieutenant Governor, Likely To Contest Lok Sabha Polls

Tamilisai Soundararajan, the incumbent Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, has formally submitted her resignation to Droupadi Murmu, the President of India. This resignation marks the conclusion of her tenure in both executive positions, as confirmed by the Raj Bhavan.

Soundararajan, a prominent political figure, is now poised to enter the electoral arena and contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sources suggest that the seasoned leader from the BJP may vie for a seat in the vital Chennai South constituency in her home state of Tamil Nadu.

Having assumed office as Telangana’s Governor in November 2019, Soundararajan also held the additional responsibility of serving as Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor since February 2021. Her resignation announcement coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s public address in Jagital, underscoring significant political developments.

The BJP sources have hinted at Soundararajan’s potential candidacy in the imminent Lok Sabha polls, speculating her likely participation in the electoral battleground. Notably, the 62-year-old leader previously contested for the Thoothukudi seat in Tamil Nadu during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which is currently held by the DMK‘s Kanimozhi.

In her political journey, Soundararajan contested for the Chennai (North) seat in 2009 but faced defeat against TKS Elangovan of the DMK. Furthermore, she has run for the Tamil Nadu Assembly three times in the past – representing Radhapuram in 2006, Velachery in 2011, and Virugampakkam in 2016, albeit without clinching victory.

The buzz surrounding Soundararajan’s potential candidacy emerges as the electoral stage braces for the Lok Sabha polls, slated to unfold in seven phases. With the voting process scheduled to commence on April 19 and culminate in the counting of votes on June 4, the political landscape awaits the unfolding dynamics of the electoral narrative.

The upcoming elections, which will span seven phases, are poised to be a critical juncture in determining the course of political leadership, with multiple constituencies up for contention across the nation.
