Food Safety Violations At Target Center

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — As fans gathered at Target Center for the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ playoff game against the Golden State Warriors, food safety violations from a recent inspection prompted concern. A routine food safety inspection on February 12 revealed numerous health hazards in the arena’s concession stands and food preparation areas.

The City of Minneapolis conducted the inspection and found issues ranging from physical conditions to food contamination risks. Among the most alarming findings were rodent droppings at four concession locations, indicating a potential rodent infestation.

“I see trends in risky food safety behaviors — meaning not isolated to one service area and not isolated to one year routine inspection,” said Amy Johnston, a food safety educator at the University of Minnesota Extension, who reviewed the reports. The inspection also reported mold presence in ice machines and insufficient handwashing facilities.

Handwashing compliance was a notable issue, with several locations lacking properly stocked sinks and others using them for storage. In one instance, an employee transitioned from washing dishes to handling food without proper handwashing.

Even premium areas like the Lexus Courtside Club were not exempt from violations. They were cited for lacking sneeze guards around self-serve food and improper temperature control for hot foods. Pork sliders were reported to be held at only 128 degrees, failing to meet safety standards.

Johnston emphasized that food safety awareness is essential for consumers. “There is an unfair burden that is placed on consumers when it comes to food safety. They need to be informed to make safe choices,” she said.

Target Center was not alone in its issues. Target Field and U.S. Bank Stadium also reported violations in past inspections. Target Field struggled with food temperature control while U.S. Bank Stadium faced similar rodent and sanitation issues.

The Minneapolis Health Department stated that stadiums are inspected annually and during large events to ensure compliance with safety practices. When violations occur, the Department collaborates with vendors to rectify them.

Aramark Sports + Entertainment, the food service provider for U.S. Bank Stadium, affirmed that food safety is a top priority. “We maintain the highest standards in our food production and safety processes,” said a company representative.

Levy, the food service provider at Target Center, also addressed the inspection findings, noting that during the February health review, they received a strong overall rating, and all identified concerns were later resolved. “We are committed to serving fans with the highest-quality food and beverage experience,” they stated.

As fans fill Target Center for the Timberwolves’ playoff games, the focus on food safety remains paramount.
