Tensions Rise in Ivorian Political Party After Presidential Victory
ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire — A heated exchange occurred between the President of the National Assembly, Adama Bictogo, and the head of the Senate during a party meeting on November 19 regarding the celebration of Alassane Ouattara‘s recent presidential victory.
The meeting of the executive board of the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) was marked by renewed tensions within the ruling party. Reports indicate a disagreement erupted on how to celebrate Ouattara’s election win, where he secured 89.77 percent of the votes.
In light of the recent election, Ouattara faces the challenge of a potential cabinet reshuffle, as many government members, including some close to him, have to resign due to the incompatibility of their parliamentary and ministerial positions. This transition is significant and could lead to a major reorganization of the cabinet.
As the party grapples with internal conflicts, the People’s Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI) has yet to announce its official list of candidates for the upcoming legislative elections set for December 27. This delay has sparked tensions among party members, particularly between supporters of Tidjane Thiam and those nostalgic for Henri Konan Bédié’s era.
Amid ongoing political jockeying, the need for unity in the ruling party remains crucial as the nation prepares for legislative elections. The next months will be pivotal for RHDP, especially as they reassess their strategy in response to internal strife and the political landscape.
