Thalapathy' Vijay Announces Political Entry With Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam Party

Tamil superstar Vijay, popularly known as ‘Thalapathy’, has made a significant announcement by officially entering the political arena. On Friday, Vijay unveiled his new political party named ‘Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’, which translates to ‘victorious Tamil association’. Putting an end to speculations, he revealed that his party would not participate in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections but aims to contest in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Vijay, known for his massive box office success, has been dropping hints about his political aspirations for a while now. During previous audio launches of his films like ‘Mersal’ and ‘Varisu’, he utilized the platform to express his concerns about the state of affairs in Tamil Nadu and India, urging for improvement of conditions for the common people.

The Tamil superstar has also portrayed the role of a would-be chief minister in his 2018 film ‘Sarkar‘, further showcasing his sincerity towards assuming a real-life leadership position. In fact, during the audio launch of ‘Sarkar’, Vijay made a bold statement that if he were to become the chief minister, he would prioritize action over acting, criticizing politicians whom he perceives as mere performers.

In his official statement, Vijay emphasized his vision of establishing a corruption-free, progressive, and secular government. He pointed out the prevailing divisions among people based on religion and caste, along with the widespread corruption, highlighting the need for change. With this political plunge, Vijay joins the ranks of prominent personalities from Tamil Nadu’s film industry who have ventured into politics.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed influential political figures emerging from the film industry, such as MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, both of whom served as Chief Ministers. M Karunanidhi, another leader who held the CM position, was a renowned screenwriter. While MGR formed the AIADMK party, Jayalalithaa was a key member, and Karunanidhi was associated with the DMK, which presently governs the state. Additionally, DMDK founder Vijayakanth, who joined politics in 2023, and Kamal Haasan, who founded Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018, have also transitioned from successful acting careers to political activism.

Vijay’s foray into politics has generated significant interest among his fans and the general public, who eagerly await the debut of his party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections of 2026.
