LOS ANGELES, CA — Tim Allen‘s sitcom ‘Shifting Gears’ returns for its second season on October 1. The show centers on Matt Parker, played by Allen, who navigates the challenges of life after the loss of his wife while rebuilding his relationship with his estranged daughter, Riley, portrayed by Kat Dennings.

The season premiere is titled “Secret” and showcases Matt’s struggle with his feelings for Eve, played by Jenna Elfman. The synopsis notes that Charlotte, portrayed by Nancy Travis, encourages Matt to attend a grief support group. Meanwhile, Riley grapples with her own romantic uncertainties regarding Gabe, played by Seann William Scott.

In a twist for fans, original ‘Home Improvement’ cast members Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning make guest appearances to support Matt in unexpected ways. Their involvement adds a nostalgic element to the series, furthering the connection between Allen’s past and present roles.

Michelle Nader, showrunner of ‘Shifting Gears,’ spoke about the evolving dynamics in the second season, particularly between Riley and Gabe, stating, “It’s interesting to watch their relationship develop, and so they’re going to go into high gear — but it’s going to be a little bit of a roller-coaster.”

As the season progresses, viewers can expect to see Matt assessing his romantic prospects with both Eve and Charlotte, culminating in moments of humor and heartfelt emotion. Allen expressed his enthusiasm for the writing, noting that it accurately reflects the characters’ journeys in a sincere and comedic manner.

‘Shifting Gears’ Season 2 premieres on ABC at 8 p.m. ET before streaming the following day on Hulu. Tim Allen fans can look forward to a blend of comedy and drama as the series dives deeper into the complexities of grief, love, and family.
