Nigeria‘s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu spoke to the nation on August 4, 2024, addressing the unrest caused by protests in various states.

In his speech, he expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction of properties during these demonstrations, which were initially promised to be peaceful. Tinubu highlighted that young Nigerians, filled with hopes for a better future, were front and center in these protests.

The President emphasized the need for order, reminding the public of his commitment to protect the lives and properties of every citizen. He urged protesters and organizers to halt their actions and enter into dialogue, stressing that unity among all Nigerians is essential in these challenging times.

In his remarks, he denounced any form of ethnic division and stated that the law would take its course against anyone trying to ignite tensions between different groups. He reiterated his vision for a prosperous Nigeria built on democracy, transparency, and accountability.

Tinubu also pointed out the economic struggles Nigeria has faced and the significant changes his government has implemented. He mentioned the painful yet necessary removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange systems to stimulate economic growth.

According to him, these actions have led to a doubling of government revenues and a revival of the non-oil sector. He praised the collective efforts made to rebuild the economy while also ensuring that more resources are directed towards essential social services like education and healthcare.

The President shared updates on various infrastructure projects across the country, highlighting significant ongoing works such as the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry highway projects, which are set to boost economic activity by connecting multiple states.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the oil and gas industry is seeing a resurgence, as reforms have attracted foreign investments, which is crucial for the nation’s economic recovery. He also introduced the Compressed Natural Gas Initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs and dependence on imported fuels.

To support the youth, Tinubu announced initiatives such as a student loan scheme, a consumer credit program, and several skills development programs, targeting millions of young Nigerians.

His message was clear: he understands the frustrations causing the protests, yet he firmly believes in resolving issues without resorting to violence. He reassured citizens that the government is listening and taking active steps toward positive change.
