SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) — A winter storm is prompting travel advisories across northern Indiana, with all nine counties in the Michiana area now under advisory as of 7:30 p.m. EST on February 12, 2025. The travel advisory includes Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Pulaski, St. Joseph, and Starke counties.
The advisories indicate that while routine travel is not prohibited, conditions may be hazardous, prompting officials to urge caution. In Indiana, the county emergency management agencies are responsible for initiating travel advisories, which are updated in real time at the state’s travel status website.
Counties designated as YELLOW are under an advisory, meaning routine travel can be restricted due to hazardous situations. Those classified as ORANGE are under a watch, where travel should be limited to essential trips, and RED counties are facing warnings, restricting travel to emergency personnel only.
In a related weather update, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties in Michigan, along with several Indiana counties, effective from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Light snow is expected to start after lunchtime on Wednesday, intensifying significantly in the evening, which may impact evening commutes.
According to forecasts, snowfall amounts could range from 3 to 6 inches across the area, but localized totals may exceed 6 inches in some regions. Areas south and east may experience a mix of rain and snow, potentially leading to lower snow totals.
“Travel will likely be difficult for those commuting Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, so drivers are recommended to stay updated on the weather and road conditions,” a spokesperson for the county emergency management said.
This winter storm is expected to yield a brief break in wintry conditions on Friday before another system approaches over the weekend, according to meteorologists.
