Trump Proposes Renaming Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’
President-elect Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America,’ citing its significance to the United States. The announcement came during an impromptu press conference where Trump emphasized the need for a more ‘American’ name for the body of water.
‘We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,’ Trump said. ‘That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.’ Trump added that the official announcement would be made ‘at a future date pretty soon.’
The Gulf of Mexico borders five U.S. states: Florida, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Trump argued that the U.S. does ‘most of the work there and it’s ours,’ while criticizing Mexico as a ‘very dangerous place’ and reiterating his stance on immigration and tariffs.
‘Mexico’s really in trouble. A lot of trouble. It’s a very dangerous place,’ Trump said. He also repeated threats to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, claiming that drugs are entering the U.S. at ‘record numbers’ through these countries, though he provided no specific evidence.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has yet to publicly respond to Trump’s remarks. The two leaders have previously discussed tariff threats in recent months.
During the press conference, Trump also declined to rule out using military force to retake control of the Panama Canal, a vital waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. ‘I’m not going to commit to that. It might be that you’ll have to do something,’ he said when questioned about the possibility.
In a related development, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., has been dispatched to Greenland following a post on Trump’s Truth Social platform. ‘I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,’’ Trump wrote. ‘My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights.’
The proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico has sparked mixed reactions, with critics questioning its feasibility and diplomatic implications. Supporters, however, have praised the move as a symbolic assertion of American influence.
