Trump Reveals Biden’s Farewell Letter in Oval Office Discovery
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump revealed the contents of a farewell letter left by former President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, sharing the message exclusively with Fox News on Wednesday. The letter, discovered in the Resolute Desk, was addressed to “Dear President Trump” and expressed Biden’s hopes for a prosperous and peaceful future for the nation.
The tradition of outgoing presidents leaving notes for their successors dates back to 1989, when President Ronald Reagan left a letter for George H.W. Bush. Biden’s letter, dated Jan. 20, 2025, read: “As I take leave of this sacred office, I wish you and your family all the best in the next four years. The American people — and people around the world — look to this house for steadiness in the inevitable storms of history, and my prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation.”
Trump found the letter Monday evening after Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy inquired about its existence. “He may have. Don’t they leave it in the desk? I don’t know,” Trump initially responded before locating the envelope marked “47.” He later described the letter as “very nice” and “inspirational,” adding, “I appreciated the letter.”
Biden, who received a similar note from Trump in 2021, has not disclosed the contents of that letter, calling it private. This exchange marks the first time in modern history that a president has written a letter to someone who is both their successor and predecessor, as Trump is the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve nonconsecutive terms.
The White House confirmed the authenticity of the letter, which concluded with Biden’s signature and a blessing: “May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.”
