Trump Sparks Controversy with Greenland Purchase Proposal
President-elect Donald Trump reignited controversy on Monday by posting a video on his social media platform, Truth Social, featuring a convicted drug dealer purchasing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat in Greenland. The post, which has garnered significant attention, included a caption suggesting that Greenland could benefit from becoming part of the United States.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,'” Trump wrote. “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
The video features Timmy Zeeb, a Greenlandic man with a criminal record, who expressed support for the U.S. purchasing Greenland. Zeeb, who has been convicted of multiple crimes, including a significant cannabis-related case in 2019, told Danish media outlet DR News that he believes Greenland should be sold to the U.S. to escape Danish colonial rule.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been a subject of U.S. interest for decades. Former President Harry Truman attempted to purchase the island in 1946 for $100 million in gold. More recently, Trump floated the idea in 2019, citing strategic and resource-related interests in the Arctic region.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, swiftly rejected Trump’s proposal, stating, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale, and we will never be for sale. We must not lose our long fight for freedom.”
Trump’s post has sparked a mix of reactions online, with the video being shared over 9,200 times and receiving 36,000 likes. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk praised the idea on social media, writing, “The youth of Greenland love America and they love Trump. Let’s go!!”
However, experts have questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s claims. Rasmus Brun Pedersen, an associate professor of international politics at Denmark’s Aarhus University, told DR News, “I doubt he has been checked. It seems a bit unfortunate, to say the least.”
Trump defended his stance during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, emphasizing Greenland’s strategic importance for national security. “We need Greenland for national security purposes,” he said. “I’ve been told that for a long time, long before I even ran.”
As Greenland continues its push for independence from Denmark, Trump’s proposal has added a new layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape of the Arctic region.
