Trump Urges Russia to End War as Zelensky Criticizes Peace Delays

BERLIN, Germany — U.S. President Donald Trump is expressing frustration with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the slow pace of negotiations to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. During a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Trump stated that both leaders need to take decisive actions towards reaching a peace agreement.
Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately extending the conflict, saying, “They will constantly look for reasons not to end the war.” He emphasized the need for concrete negotiations, which have stalled despite previous talks in Istanbul earlier this month. The Kremlin had dismissed the notion of a trilateral summit involving Trump without preliminary agreements already in place.
The tensions have escalated recently, with Ukraine launching nearly 300 drones towards Russia, reportedly targeting military production sites. Moscow’s Defense Ministry claimed minimal damage occurred from the assault.
At the same time, Trump remarked on the potential for new sanctions against Russia if it does not cease its aggressive actions toward Ukraine. He described Putin as “playing with fire” due to the ongoing violence, particularly in the context of recent aerial assaults that have killed civilians in Ukraine.
During the press conference, Zelensky urged his allies to consider including Ukraine in an upcoming NATO summit, warning that failing to do so would signify a victory for Russia. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz supported Ukraine’s request, stating his government would assist in developing new long-range weaponry.
As negotiations continue, the situation on the ground remains dire. Ukrainian military officials report that Russia is amassing over 50,000 troops near the northeastern Sumy border, attempting to create a buffer zone in the ongoing conflict.
“We must remain vigilant in our efforts to respond to these hostilities,” Zelensky stated. Meanwhile, the G7 leaders are expected to discuss further measures to support Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
