Unknown 9 Awakening Game

Bandai Namco has announced the release of its new game, “Unknown 9: Awakening,” which was unveiled through an Xbox Partner Preview event seven months ago. The game, which is now available to players, has generated relatively low scores and mixed reactions.

The game has been classified as a AA title, a category facing challenges with regard to the perception of quality within the industry. Despite the anticipation, “Unknown 9: Awakening” has not received high acclaim. The minimal number of Steam reviews, totaling only 13 at this time, reflects a limited player base, currently at 224 players. Gaming industry observers have noted parallels with “Concord,” offering insights into the game’s performance metrics.

“You play as Haroona, a Quaestor born with the ability to venture into the Fold: a mysterious dimension that overlaps our own,” the official game description reads. “On her quest for powerful hidden knowledge, she will learn to master her unique connection to the Fold, which allows her to channel its powers into our world…but such power does not go unnoticed.” The game’s central narrative revolves around Haroona’s struggle against the Ascendants, a faction of the secret society known as the LYS, aiming to exploit the Fold.

The game, priced at $50, has been the subject of some controversy and discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in gaming culture. Marketing efforts appeared limited, the largest push being a live-action trailer featuring Anya Chalotra, known for her role in Netflix’s “The Witcher.” The marketing strategy, however, has not substantially increased the game’s visibility or reception according to reports.

In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Chalotra discussed her role in “Unknown 9: Awakening,” highlighting its significance in featuring a South Asian protagonist within 20th-century India. “It’s so exciting for me because I know I’ll go home and see the girls in my family pick up this game and be excited by what they’re seeing and who they’re playing as,” Chalotra noted. The actress emphasized the connection to her dual heritage, describing her personal engagement with her character’s unique background.

The game is part of an attempt to launch a new franchise, with Bandai Namco exploring avenues to appeal to diverse audiences during a challenging period for the industry. Despite the lackluster initial response, the game represents a step toward diversity in video gaming, potentially laying groundwork for future titles and expansions.
