Icy Roads Greenville South Carolina Winter Weather

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – School districts across the Upstate region of South Carolina announced adjusted schedules for Tuesday, Jan. 14, following winter weather that brought ice and snow to the area over the weekend. Greenville County Schools will operate on a normal schedule, but buses will avoid specific icy roads deemed impassable by the district’s Inclement Conditions Evaluation Team.

According to a statement from Greenville County Schools (GCS), the number of roads impacted by ice has improved since Sunday. However, some routes remain hazardous. Families of students on affected bus routes will be notified directly by the transportation department. “We encourage everyone to continue to use caution when traveling, particularly on bridges and shady roads,” the statement read.

Spartanburg District One announced a two-hour delay for Tuesday. The district cited hazardous road conditions, including black ice, as the primary reason for the adjustment. “This afternoon, our teams assessed road conditions throughout our attendance area. While today’s warmer temperatures helped with some melting, many secondary roads remain hazardous due to lingering ice, snow, and black ice, particularly in shaded areas,” the district said in a Facebook post. Temperatures are expected to drop to 26°F overnight, raising concerns about refreezing.

Henderson County Schools opted for a remote learning day due to snow and ice covering some roads. Meanwhile, Buncombe County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay, citing similar concerns about icy conditions. Spartanburg District 7, however, will maintain a regular schedule.

Local officials emphasized the importance of safety as communities navigate the lingering effects of the winter storm. “This delay will allow our buses, staff, parents, and student drivers to travel more safely to school,” Spartanburg District One stated.
