USWNT’s Alex Morgan Excluded from Olympic Roster in Surprising Decision
One of the most renowned players in U.S. women’s soccer, Alex Morgan, found herself notably absent from the 18-player roster unveiled by coach Emma Hayes for the upcoming Olympics, as reported by USA TODAY. The decision came as a surprise to many, with Morgan being a key figure in the team’s history and a top performer in the NWSL.
Despite Morgan’s impressive track record as a forward, the likes of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, Jaedyn Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Crystal Dunn secured spots on the roster. Hayes emphasized the need for versatility and squad depth in a tournament where only 16 outfield players are permitted, ultimately opting for players who could adapt to multiple positions.
The roster also featured standout names such as goalkeepers Casey Murphy and Alyssa Naeher, defenders Tierna Davidson, Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Casey Krueger, Jenna Nighswonger, and Emily Sonnett, along with midfielders Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, and Catarina Macario.
Amid the roster announcements, Morgan was not only left out of the main lineup but was also overlooked as an alternate, with Lynn Williams securing the forward position instead. Alternates Jane Campbell, Hal Hershfelt, and Croix Bethune will accompany the USWNT to France for the Olympics.
Hayes, acknowledging Morgan’s exceptional contributions, expressed the difficulty of the decision and highlighted the chosen players’ current performances. With a roster comprising both experienced and emerging talents, Hayes emphasized the team’s progress and the focus on achieving the best possible performance level.
This unexpected exclusion marks a significant shift for the USWNT, which has been undergoing a transition period post-recent disappointing showings in major tournaments. As the team gears up to face off against opponents like Zambia, Germany, and Australia in the Olympics, the younger roster reflects a strategic move by Hayes to balance experience with fresh talent.
