Vaughan Gething Makes History as Wales’ First Black First Minister
Vaughan Gething has secured a historic win in the Welsh Labour leadership election, emerging as Wales‘ first black first minister with 51.7% of the votes. His victory comes after a closely fought contest against Jeremy Miles, who garnered 48.3% of the support. The results were announced at Cardiff University, marking a significant milestone in Welsh political history.
Throughout his campaign, Gething faced challenges, including controversies surrounding donations to his campaign. These issues, however, did not deter his supporters, and he is now poised to succeed Mark Drakeford as the new first minister of Wales. Gething, currently serving as economy minister, celebrated his 50th birthday on the day of the announcement.
In his acceptance speech, Gething commended his predecessor Drakeford for his leadership during the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of Welsh solutions to Welsh problems through devolution. He also acknowledged his opponent, Jeremy Miles, who would have become Wales’ first gay leader if elected.
Jeremy Miles, in a written statement, congratulated Gething on his victory, expressing his pride in the campaign they ran together. Despite the outcome, Miles highlighted the support they garnered from various sectors, including Welsh Labour members, council leaders, and trade unions.
Gething’s win not only marks a personal achievement but also signifies a broader shift in Welsh political leadership. As the first black leader of a European nation, he symbolizes a new chapter in Wales’ history, promising to address the country’s challenges with a fresh perspective and unwavering commitment.
The Co-operative Party’s all-member vote was instrumental in Gething’s successful campaign, reflecting a diverse range of support for his leadership bid. With a focus on inclusivity and progress, Gething aims to lead Wales into a new era of governance, embodying values rooted in his extensive experience and dedication to public service.
