Victor Martinez-Hernandez Convicted of Premeditated Murder in Rachel Morin Case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A jury found Victor Martinez-Hernandez guilty on all charges Monday, including first-degree premeditated murder, in the highly publicized Rachel Morin trial. The verdict was reached after the jury deliberated for just over an hour.
Martinez-Hernandez, 24, was charged with multiple offenses stemming from the August 2023 disappearance and death of Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five. Prosecutors presented a case supported by DNA evidence and witness testimony, establishing that Martinez-Hernandez was the only male DNA profile found on Morin’s body.
The verdict brought audible reactions in the packed courtroom, which included family and friends of Morin. Observers reported quiet gasps and expressions of relief when the jury’s decision was announced.
During the trial, trial attorney Randolph Rice stated, “This was a very important day that puts the bow on the case,” highlighting the importance of the jury’s decision following the prosecution’s presentation of evidence.
Morin had gone for a jog along the Ma and Pa Trail and was reported missing in August 2023. Her body was discovered days later on August 6. The prosecution detailed how surveillance footage and witness accounts positioned Martinez-Hernandez near the crime scene during crucial times leading up to and following her death.
On Thursday, the court heard from a Maryland State Police DNA analyst who confirmed that the defendant’s DNA was the only male sample collected from the scene. Additionally, testimony indicated that witnesses observed Martinez-Hernandez hiding in the woods with a shovel.
Following the jury’s announcement, Martinez-Hernandez showed no visible reaction. Sentencing will occur at a later date, during which family members of Morin will be allowed to present impact statements. The prosecution is seeking a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
A news conference with the prosecution is scheduled to follow this verdict, providing clarity on the next steps in the case.
