Charlie Kirk Vigil Tempe 2025

TEMPE, Arizona — Thousands gathered Monday night for a candlelight vigil at Desert Financial Arena to honor Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist shot and killed on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University.

The vigil featured emotional speeches and heartfelt remembrances from supporters, with attendees lighting candles and displaying “Make America Great Again” hats. Troy Holderby, president of the College Republicans chapter at Arizona State University, opened the event by asking those who felt Kirk had impacted their lives to rise, prompting an uproarious ovation.

“Charlie impacted us all,” Holderby said. The gathering showcased how public figures can forge deep, albeit one-sided connections with their followers, particularly when tragedy strikes. Psychologists suggest that such parasocial relationships elicit profound grief among fans who have never directly connected with the individual.

Hannah Carson from Phoenix was among the mourners. “We always would send his videos. My family was devastated when they found out,” she said, reflecting on the bond her family had through Kirk’s online presence. Carson wore a T-shirt depicting a famous Trump moment to honor the late activist.

As speakers honored Kirk’s legacy, they emphasized the necessity of political action. Tyler Bowyer, CEO of Turning Point USA, said, “If this crazy leftist radicalization is happening in Utah, it’s happening everywhere.”

Others, like Mac Brunk, a 21-year-old ASU student, shared their admiration for Kirk’s message and beliefs, noting, “He was a good husband…that’s what drew me to him.” Sean Zubernis, a fan psychology expert, explained that the emotional responses observed at the vigil are common when a public figure passes away.

Outside the arena, Dan Beazley set up a significant wooden cross, saying, “If you’re going to do it, do it right.” This sentiment resonated through various speeches that evening, calling on attendees to channel their grief into action.

The memorial served not only as a tribute but also as a rallying cry for Kirk’s supporters amidst an increasingly polarized political climate.
