Viktor Gyokeres Ballon D'or 2025

PARIS, France — Viktor Gyokeres was awarded the Gerd Muller Trophy tonight at the Ballon d'Or Awards for his impressive scoring record during the 2024/25 season. The trophy recognizes the highest-scoring player for club and country and has been awarded since 2021. Gyokeres played for Sporting Lisbon and the Swedish national team, scoring a remarkable 54 goals in 52 matches throughout the season.

His goals were crucial in helping Sporting Lisbon secure the Primeira Liga title and the Taca de Portugal. Gyokeres also finished as the top scorer in the 2024/25 Nations League. Last year, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane shared the trophy, each netting 52 goals for their respective teams. Previously, Erling Haaland won the award in 2023 with 56 goals.

After receiving the award, Gyokeres expressed gratitude to his teammates, saying, “Thanks to everyone at Sporting last season for making this possible for me. We had an amazing season together winning both the league and the cup.” He added that winning the award was a great honor and spoke about his desire to keep scoring goals. “Since I started playing football I was hungry for goals. It’s such an honor to win this award,” he said.

The 27-year-old striker scored 39 goals in 33 league games and added 15 goals in 19 cup matches for Sporting Lisbon. He also scored 10 goals for Sweden in just seven matches. Gyokeres has recently joined Arsenal on a five-year deal and has already scored three goals in six appearances for the Gunners this season.

Gyokeres is the first Swedish player to win an award at a Ballon d’Or ceremony. He follows in the footsteps of notable past winners Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.
