Fla Flu Maracanã Fan Clashes

On October 17, 2024, violent clashes between organized fan groups were recorded near the intersection of Barão de Mesquita and São Francisco Xavier streets, in the Maracanã area of Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred shortly before the highly anticipated Fla-Flu derby, a classic football match between Flamengo and Fluminense, part of the Brasileirão Championship.

Footage of the altercation shows dozens of individuals involved, with at least two men unconscious and being assaulted while lying motionless. Bystanders appeared hesitant and struggled to prevent further violence against the injured.

Reports indicate that stun grenades were deployed in an attempt to deescalate the situation; however, the violence persisted. As of this report, there is no official information regarding the number of injuries or the health status of those involved in the brawl.

The disturbances took place just a few blocks away from Maracanã Stadium, where Flamengo faced Fluminense. The match is part of the 30th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, with Flamengo actively competing for a place in the 2025 Copa Libertadores and potentially the championship title.

Flamengo, under the new management of head coach Filipe Luís, is forced to make adjustments due to upcoming matches and player fatigue post-international duty. Key players such as Gerson, Erick Pulgar, and Nicolás De la Cruz were not included in the squad for this match due to fatigue and minor injuries.

The match between Flamengo and Fluminense, colloquially known as Fla-Flu, was broadcast exclusively on the Premiere channel via pay-per-view, highlighting the intense rivalry and fervent fan following of these two storied Brazilian football clubs.
