Warsaw Mayor Trzaskowski Declares Victory in Close Presidential Race

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has declared himself the winner of Poland’s presidential runoff election on June 1, 2025, amidst a tightly contested race against conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki.
Trzaskowski, a pro-European Union candidate backed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, claimed 50.3% of the vote compared to Nawrocki’s 49.7%, according to initial exit polls. The race was marked by a narrow margin, indicating a deeply divided electorate.
In a victory speech at his campaign headquarters, Trzaskowski expressed confidence in his win, stating, “This is a special moment in the history of Poland. I am convinced that this will allow us to move forward like a torpedo.” He emphasized his commitment to uniting the country and implementing reforms to bridge political divides.
However, Nawrocki, who previously served as a historian and amateur boxer, remains defiant. He stated that his team is optimistic about the results, asserting, “We will win this election.” His campaign has centered around preserving traditional Polish values and skepticism toward the European Union.
As the night unfolded, both candidates’ supporters remained fervently engaged. At Nawrocki’s headquarters, chants of “We’ve won” echoed as he vowed to oppose what he described as attempts to consolidate power by Tusk and his party.
The election has significant implications for Poland’s political future, particularly regarding its relationship with the EU and ongoing domestic issues. Trzaskowski aims to restore judicial independence and ease restrictions on abortion, while Nawrocki’s platform aligns closely with conservative ideals.
With the official results expected to be announced soon, the turnout for the election was notably high, reaching 54.91% by late afternoon, surpassing previous presidential elections.
This election is seen as a pivotal moment for Poland as it navigates its identity within the EU framework, particularly in light of the political tensions raised during the прошлый administration.
