60,000 Wawa-Branded Tumblers Recalled Due to Laceration Hazard from Metal Straws
Wawa, a popular convenience store chain, is recalling approximately 60,000 of its branded tumblers due to a significant safety concern. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on October 31, 2024, is prompted by reports of laceration injuries caused by the metal straws included with the tumblers.
The affected tumblers are 24-ounce reusable plastic containers that were sold exclusively at Wawa stores in several states, including Alabama, Washington D.C., Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland, during August 2024. These tumblers came in four distinct designs: “The Mermaid,” “Island Surf,” “Sailor Breeze,” and “The Galaxy,” each with a tan lid.
The metal straws inside these tumblers pose a risk of cutting users’ mouths and/or fingers, leading to four reported injuries to date. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising consumers to immediately stop using the metal straws and contact Halo Branding Solutions, the distributor of the tumblers, for a silicone replacement straw.
Consumers also have the option to return the tumbler and metal straw to receive a $15 refund in the form of a Wawa gift card. However, they are instructed not to return the recalled items to Wawa stores but instead follow the instructions provided on Halo’s website or contact Halo directly.
Wawa has stated that it stopped selling the recalled tumblers in its stores since mid-August and reported that over 5,400 units were sold during the period they were available..
