Why Many Americans Are Considering Retirement Abroad in 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A recent Harris Poll reveals that nearly half of Americans are considering retirement abroad, with 14% planning to move overseas within two years. The survey highlights the growing appeal of lower living costs, better healthcare, and overall quality of life in foreign countries.
Cost of living remains the primary motivator, with 49% of respondents citing it as the top reason for their consideration. Countries like Mexico, Canada, and Australia are popular due to their perceived affordability and lifestyle benefits, according to the poll.
Healthcare costs in the U.S. are a significant concern as well. A substantial 38% of potential expats are drawn to nations offering cheaper and more accessible healthcare systems. This trend is especially notable among retirees, who seek financial stability in their later years.
The political environment in the U.S. also influences many people’s decisions. Nearly half of those considering a move abroad express dissatisfaction with the current political leadership, pushing them to seek more stable environments that align with their values.
“People are in survival mode and just want out,” said Kio Wakesho Simmons, CEO of Traverse Culture. “However, it’s important to have a solid plan in place so that they can avoid costly mistakes.”
Quality of life, including aspects like climate and community engagement, is another important factor. According to the poll, over 40% of respondents aim for a better lifestyle, driven by safer cities and the opportunity for personal growth.
Experts advise potential expats to visit their chosen destination before making the leap. Simmons recommends a 12 to 15-day “investigative tour” to assess daily life, housing, and healthcare options firsthand. This cautious approach can mitigate the emotional impulses associated with major life changes.
As the desire for a new life grows, many people are now weighing not just financial benefits, but the overall impact on their quality of life when considering relocation. Whether for personal reasons or economic reasons, retiring abroad could increasingly become a viable option for Americans.
