Wiley Nickel Launches U.S. Senate Campaign in North Carolina

Raleigh, North Carolina – Wiley Nickel is officially campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first Democrat to enter the race ahead of the upcoming primary elections in spring 2026. Nickel’s announcement comes as incumbent Senator Thom Tillis‘s term is set to end in 2026, amid expectations of robust competition from Democratic candidates, including former Governor Roy Cooper.
Nickel, who previously served North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, made his campaign announcement Wednesday. He lost his reelection bid last year after significant redistricting reform that favored his Republican opponent. During his time in Congress, Nickel advocated for the establishment of “nonpartisan redistricting commissions” nationwide in an effort to combat gerrymandering, a system he argued must be reformed to ensure fair representation.
“North Carolinians are struggling with rising costs, low wages and a Senator who cares more about his own career than helping them. I can’t sit on the sidelines and watch it happen,” Nickel stated, highlighting the main themes of his campaign focused on economic accountability and public service.
Nickel and his family, which includes his wife and two young children, reside in Cary, North Carolina. His personal commitment to the community is evident as he seeks to address the statewide concerns of citizens. He emphasized that he plans to prioritize the needs of North Carolinians as he rolls out his campaign initiatives.
As the election draws nearer, analysts will closely watch Nickel’s campaign for its strategies and impact on the Democratic primary race. The political landscape in North Carolina is evolving, and Nickel aims to position himself as a leading voice in a party looking to regain ground in a state trending purple.
