Uk Snow Forecast October 2024

Weather forecasts indicate that a significant chill will envelop the United Kingdom this weekend as temperatures are expected to plummet, with heavy snowfall likely in the Highlands of Scotland. The country entered a four-day stretch of cold weather starting on Thursday, marking an uncommonly early start to winter-like conditions for October.

Weather maps and meteorological reports show snow moving in from the west on Saturday evening, covering a broad area of over 200 miles from the northern Highlands down to Argyll. Parts of the Cairngorms, Moray, Aberdeenshire, and other regions are bracing for winter weather as temperatures are forecasted to dip below freezing across northern Scotland. On Sunday, the lowest temperatures are expected in isolated areas, where the mercury could drop to minus 3 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office has cautioned that conditions will be “cold enough for snow” in the Grampian region, with showers expected to fall as snow over the Highlands. Meteorologist James Madden, representing Exacta Weather, stated, “Snow or heavy snow showers will continue across higher ground in the far north and Scotland through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.”

The chill is attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Kirk, which recently affected northern France and is now causing a sub-zero Arctic plume. The cold air, travelling from the tropics via the jet stream, is pulling down temperatures across the UK, especially in central and northern regions. Temperatures could fall from mild conditions of 14-15 degrees Celsius to just above freezing.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist with British Weather Services, noted that the cold will be particularly felt in the north, where temperatures might drop to minus 1 or 2 degrees Celsius, potentially causing frost. “People will feel the cold ahead of the weekend,” he remarked.

However, experts predict that this cold snap will be brief. According to James Madden, “From Sunday into Monday, we will see high pressure starting to rise, bringing warmer temperatures than average for this time of year.” The Met Office also forecasts more temperate weather for next week, with drier and milder conditions expected as the cold air dissipates.
