Omaha Winter Storm Weather Forecast

OMAHA, Neb. — A significant winter storm is expected to impact the Omaha area starting Friday evening and continuing through Saturday night. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for most of eastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa, forecasting accumulations of 3 to 6 inches of snow in the Omaha metro area.

The winter storm warnings are in effect from this afternoon through Saturday night, with some areas just east of Omaha potentially receiving up to 8 inches of snow. The conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day on Saturday, leading to difficult travel across Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

“It’s cold, breezy, and cloudy in Omaha, with temperatures hovering just below freezing,” said meteorologist Sean Everson, with KETV NewsWatch 7. “As the system approaches, we could see light snow mixed with rain this afternoon, turning to all snow by tomorrow morning.”

Travelers are advised to reconsider plans to travel on Saturday, as the forecast indicates heavy snowfall and strong winds, making roads hazardous. Everson mentioned that if travelers can leave today, it would be safer than waiting for the storm to hit.

By Saturday morning, areas north of the I-80 corridor are expected to see mostly snow, while mixed precipitation will continue to affect areas south of Omaha. Light snow showers are anticipated to begin Friday afternoon, with more widespread snowfall expected on Saturday, leading to possible trunk road impassability.

Once the storm moves through, temperatures are predicted to drop into the single digits, creating a wind chill factor as low as -5 degrees Fahrenheit. Residents should be prepared for the cold snap following the snowfall over the weekend.
