Winter Weather Advisory Hits Detroit with Snow and Bitter Cold
DETROIT (FOX 2) – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Metro Detroit as snow and bitter cold grip the region Tuesday. The advisory, active from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., covers Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties, with snow accumulations expected between 1 to 3 inches.
An arctic blast has plunged morning temperatures 10 to 15 degrees colder than Monday, with highs struggling to reach 19 degrees. Wind chills will remain in the single digits throughout the day, making it the coldest day of the workweek. While the region won’t break the record low of -9 degrees set in 1893, the combination of snow and frigid temperatures poses challenges for commuters.
Meteorologist Lori Pinson warns of snow squalls, which could bring heavy snowfall and gusty winds, reducing visibility and creating slick road conditions. “These snow bands could drop snow in a short period of time, leading to rapid accumulations,” Pinson said. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., particularly along the I-96 and I-94 corridors.
Looking ahead, another chance of snow is forecast for Thursday, with temperatures moderating by Friday. Highs are expected to reach the mid-30s, offering a brief respite before another arctic blast arrives Sunday, bringing lows near 8 degrees by Monday.
Residents are advised to allow extra travel time and exercise caution on roads. For the latest updates, including live radar and detailed forecasts, visit local weather resources.
