Woody Harrelson True Detective

NEW YORK, NY – Woody Harrelson has officially stated there is “no chance” he will return for a new season of “True Detective,” the HBO series that earned him and co-star Matthew McConaughey Emmy nominations for their roles. Speaking on NBC’s “Today” show while promoting his latest film, “Now You See Me: Now You Don't,” Harrelson firmly dismissed the idea of reuniting with McConaughey as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart.

During the interview, co-host Dylan Dreyer asked Harrelson if he would reprise his role, referencing McConaughey’s previous comments indicating he would consider it if they both agree on the quality of the script. Harrelson replied, “Matthew’s so funny, but in fairness, never. No chance. Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out the way it did, and if anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”

The series premiered its first season in 2014 and received critical acclaim, winning multiple awards. Creator Nic Pizzolatto had hinted in May that he envisioned a new story involving the original characters, suggesting that conversations about a potential return had occurred. “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolatto said.

Despite this possibility, Harrelson’s reluctance to revisit the role stems from his belief that the first season concluded perfectly. He noted the significance of their performances and added, “If anything, doing another season would tarnish that.”

While Harrelson is stepping away from “True Detective,” he confirmed he and McConaughey are working on a new project together titled “Brother From Another Mother,” a comedy series set to air on Apple TV+. Details regarding a release date are still pending.

Harrelson’s dismissal of a “True Detective” return comes just weeks after McConaughey expressed openness to a reunion, highlighting the different views of the two actors regarding revisiting their celebrated roles.
