Ryan Yarbrough Yankees Signing

TAMPA, Fla. – The New York Yankees have signed left-hander Ryan Yarbrough to a one-year deal worth $2 million, the team announced Monday. The contract also includes up to $250,000 in performance incentives. This move comes just ahead of the team’s Opening Day, as they look to solidify their bullpen with the addition of the experienced pitcher.

Yarbrough, 33, opted out of his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays during spring training after being informed he would not make the team’s Opening Day roster. “There were other teams, but this was by far the team I was most interested in,” Yarbrough said. “I’ve heard a lot from the pitching side about what they’ve been able to do with guys. That was exciting and intriguing to me.”

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees placed right-hander Luis Gil on the 60-day injured list due to a right lat strain. Yarbrough is expected to join the team for their final exhibition game against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.

Last season, Yarbrough recorded a 3.19 ERA in 44 appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Blue Jays, primarily serving as a reliever. His performance included 98 ⅔ innings pitched and demonstrated his ability to handle high-pressure situations. “Track record, a guy that can give you real length,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Definitely a different look. A guy that’s had a lot of success against us over his career.”

Before this season, Yarbrough spent his first five major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. Known for his finesse pitching style, he relies on inducing ground balls and soft contact rather than overpowering hitters. Throughout his career, he has maintained a 4.21 ERA in 196 appearances, including 68 starts.

While it’s unclear how the Yankees will utilize Yarbrough, Boone indicated that they may consider him for long relief or spot starts given their current bullpen composition. He joins Tim Hill as the second left-handed option in the bullpen.

Yarbrough’s signing also influences the roster dynamics, especially for other candidates like Brent Headrick and Yerry De Los Santos, who were previously vying for a bullpen spot. His versatility and experience should serve the Yankees well as they navigate the 2024 season.
