Young Canucks Forward Battles Testicular Cancer
Abbotsford Canucks head coach, Manny Malhotra, recently commended Jonathan Lekkerimaki for his impressive skills during an interview with Halford and Brough. Malhotra expressed admiration for the 20-year-old prospect’s capabilities, highlighting his promising future.
In other news, a concerning development has emerged regarding Dakota Joshua, who will not attend this week’s training camp in Penticton. Joshua revealed that he has been diagnosed with testicular cancer, a disclosure made public through the team’s social media channels on Tuesday. He discovered a lump on one of his testicles over the summer, which was subsequently identified as a cancerous tumor by medical professionals.
Joshua shared a statement detailing that, although the diagnosis was alarming, the doctors successfully removed the tumor. He acknowledged the weeks following this discovery as extremely challenging, but expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his family, friends, teammates, and healthcare providers.
He emphasized the importance of regular medical checks for men, especially concerning testicular cancer, and encouraged others to consult a doctor if they notice any unusual symptoms. Joshua hopes to return to playing soon, although he did not specify a timeline for his recovery.
Testicular cancer remains uncommon overall but is noted as the most prevalent cancer among young men. About 75% of cases are seminoma, a slow-growing type most frequently diagnosed in men aged 25 to 45. Fortunately, the cure rate for testicular cancer approaches 100%.
Common signs of testicular cancer include an enlarged testicle or a painless lump, as well as possible discomfort in the groin, abdomen, or back. Men may also experience a heavy feeling in the scrotum, fluid accumulation, or, in rare cases, breast enlargement due to hormonal changes.
Speaking to Postmedia last month at Troy Stecher‘s professional camp in Minoru Arena, Joshua was upbeat and excited, anticipating the upcoming hockey season. Despite the recent health challenge, he had been training hard over the summer in Michigan to ensure he was prepared for the new season.
